Denim & Diamonds

Crystals. Denim. Crowns. This is what it looks like when a legacy pageant gets a bold new chapter with a new promoter, a new venue, and a pageant with forty-seven years of history stepped into a bold new era.

KolbyKo Productions had recently taken over as owner and promoter of Miss Gay North Carolina America — an official preliminary to Miss Gay America, the first and longest-running U.S. pageant celebrating the art of female illusion. The design brief to The TAGS Group was clear: celebrate the pageant's return to Raleigh by showcasing the glitz and glamour the pageant had built over nearly five decades, while giving it a look and energy entirely its own.

Though ideas for glitter and confetti cannons were nixed, The TAGS Group made sure the "Wow!" moments started before guests ever reached their seats.

Outside Legends Nightclub Complex, the 2026 host venue, greeters in on-theme denim and sparkling jewelry welcomed guests. At the ticket booth, a denim-upholstered logo backdrop, crystal curtains, and a custom denim-covered stanchion rope signaled that this evening would be different. Inside, the front bar was a room transformed — a 20' cascading crystal column, candelabras and candlelight glowing along the bar, and a crown-topped floral arrangement atop a crystal centerpiece stood nearly ten feet above the guests, reflecting light from every surface.

Across the patio, guests passed through a crystal canopy to the theater.

At the judges' table, diamond-inspired binders waited at each seat for the scoring to begin.

Six contestants took the crystal-column adorned stage for the evening's presentation, talent, and evening gown with on-stage question categories.

Former titleholders emceed the pageant and performed between segments. Owner/Promoter Kirby Kolby even took the stage before a crowd that had come dressed in their own bedazzled denim.

Somewhere along the way, we realized our assignment wasn't about decorating a space. It was about understanding what this pageant meant to the people who built it, the people competing for its crown, and the community filling the room — and creating an environment worthy of all three.
