Public Relations Society of America - New York Chapter
Big Apple Awards

When the Public Relations Society of America New York Chapter (PRSA-NY) sought a new direction for its annual Big Apple Awards, the goal wasn’t simply to refresh the evening. It was to reframe it.

As one of the first major productions created by the newly formed The TAGS Group, the 2014 event explored the evolving language of public relations itself — from old-school newsroom culture to the increasingly digital, immediate world reshaping the industry in real time.

Guests arriving at the Mandarin Oriental New York stepped into an environment layered with references to communication across generations. Registration staff wore vintage press fedoras beside manual typewriters and glowing marquee signage. Nearby, a living-statue photographer posed for portraits with guests throughout the cocktail reception, while whiskey tastings, mercury glass, atmospheric lighting, and newsprint-inspired textures transformed the space into something that felt both nostalgic and contemporary at once.

Inside the ballroom, the theme continued through dual stages, illuminated “On Air” signs, vintage radio microphones, and introductory remarks delivered from iPads — including a live-tweeted selfie projected instantly for the audience.

Rather than treating tradition and technology as opposites, the evening intentionally allowed them to collide. Familiar industry imagery was reintroduced through a more theatrical and modern lens, creating an experience that felt especially resonant for a room filled with communications professionals.

The celebration closed with a surprise performance by LeAnn Rimes — a final reveal that carried the same sense of reinvention and unexpected energy woven throughout the evening.

Because the most successful industries never stop evolving. And neither should the experiences that celebrate them.
